Album of the month: The Zulus - The Zulus EP

Back in the early-to-mid 00s one of the main ways I discovered new music was via MP3 blogs - usually contemporary (it's how I first discovered Anais Mitchell's first two albums, for example) but occasionally older stuff too. I have no idea on which blog I heard about The Zulus, but I do remember this EP grabbing me immediately when I listened to it, and I'm sure I added its tracks to multiple CDs I burnt for my friends.

The Zulus were a Boston based rock band formed out of parts of the new wave band Human Sexual Response. They released this EP in 1985 and an album, Down on the Floor, in 1989 but never made it big outside of their local scene and split up in the early 90s. I was eventually able to find the CD of the album but it didn't really have the same effect on me as the EP.

When I first discovered them there wasn't much information available online and that hasn't really changed, a single biography on Allmusic forming the basis of a paragraph on the Wikipedia page for Human Sexual Response.

What has changed since then, however, which I only just discovered, is that guitarist Rich Gilbert has released a three CD set of live and studio recordings of the band. The self titled EP makes up the first six tracks on the second CD linked below. It seems the band also played some reunion shows and even recorded a new album. I'm planning to dig through all this stuff in the coming days, but for now I'll leave you with just the self titled EP.
